Thursday, April 16th, 2009Okay,
So have you ever gone and actually played in one of those freerolls that some bars hold every now and then? Well I decided to try my luck in one the other night at my neighbourhood pub and well, to no surprise I managed to place second against a group of 25-30 who play together several times a month.
The hand of the night went something like this:
My hole cards are Jh 9d on the big blind.
Two people limp around to me and I check… blinds are 400-800 I believe and we start with a stack of 3500. I think I had around 5,000 or so, so every blind counts at this point.
Anyways, the flop looks like this:
Jd 3d Jc
Being first to act, I simple just check. Get one check and the late position bets about 1/2 the pot. I take my time and eventually call.
Turn is a very helpful 9c
I check again and the other player also checks.
River card is a brick (2c I believe).
Thinking I can get away with a faked bluff I bet about 2000 into the pot of roughly 4,800. The other player goes insta-all-in (for another 2k I think) and I call turning over my boat. He shows a pair of 3′s w/ a 10 kicker (no flush draw here)… Here I thought I was up against another monster, but no… he pushed with absolute garbage into a pot where me folding was very unlikely.
I didn’t ask questions… never do about anothers strategy at the table, just let them continue to play blissfully terrible. Anyways, fastforward to heads up action. Played 4 hands of heads up… every single hand, except for one where he had pocket 10′s, the other guy had an ace, so I ended up losing it.
Really the other players play wasn’t the strangest part of the night. It was the fact that of all the people playing poker I was the only one who was ordering drinks and food… I even played pool against one of the guys at the table and he wouldn’t pay for a game…. isn’t that loitering if you hang out at a bar and don’t buy anything?
Well anyways take it from me, if you expect to play poker where your game will improve it’s gotta be for cash, hence why I prefer playing at a local Vancouver casino or online at Pokerstars.
Why do I still do it?
Well as it turns out if you can make it to this particular freeroll‘s winner game and win that, the grand prize is a trip to Vegas and entry in a major tournament, so there is incentive. The only catch of course is that you’ve gotta deal with people who really don’t play poker at all.
Honestly
Be patient and expect to be explaining basic rules to people… like which direction to deal the cards, and why you shouldn’t look at someone else’s mucked hand. And certainly be ready for some very strange plays.
Stay tuned and I’ll have a post for you peeps who could use some help on this area, like rules, etiquette and other things you need to get started in playing poker in Vancouver and well, anywhere really.
Cheers,
~Teh Addict
